   Greenland’s new government won’t issue more licences

CBC and other news sources report that Greenland’s new government said last week that it doesn’t plan to issue any new licences for offshore oil exploration.

Jens-Erik Kirkegaard, Greenland’s new minister for natural resources, said the 20 licences issued to date were at a level that are "natural for an area like Greenland" and that the government would be "reluctant" to offer more. Existing licences will not be affected, he added.

The US Geological Survey estimates that 13 per cent of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30 per cent of its untapped natural gas is in the Arctic.
