The Gujarat government is all set to allow controversial French vessel Clemenceau at the Alang
ship-breaking yard for salvaging 22,000 tonnes of steel despite apprehensions by environmental group Greenpeace that
it contains hazardous waste.

"The dismantling will have to be carried out as per the existing rules," said a senior GMB official.

GPCB chairman KV Bhanujan told TOI that he would announce a formal decision by the weekend only after the Supreme Court monitoring committee takes a decision in the matter after reviewing all that the ship contains in accordance with the hazardous waste rules.
