Two crew have died following a fire onboard the 1997-built Finaval chemical tanker Isola Azzurra in the Mediterranean. Ship manager Tekne Sam said the blaze broke out in the early hours of Saturday, as the 13,000–dwt vessel was sailing from Cagliari to Leghorn.
The fire in the forecastle was extinguished by the crew, but two Indians were killed.
No further injuries were reported and no pollution, the company said.
The vessel was later safely anchored at Cagliari, reached under its own power.
Tekne Sam will be carrying out a full investigation, in conjunction with the relevant authorities.
