Maritime authorities have been attempting to offload a crude cargo from a tanker aground off southern Puerto Rico. Oil containment barriers were placed around the 62,000-dwt "Sperchios" (built 1982, ex "Sanko Heron") on Wednesday. It had grounded in 30 feet of water 1.5 miles from the Guayanilla region two days earlier.
The US Coast Guard was hoping to transfer part of the 320,000-barrel cargo to another vessel to prepare for a bid to shift the Liberian-flagged "Sperchios", the Dow Jones news agency reported.
No fuel had spilled from the vessel, operated by Pleiades Shipping of Greece, and environmental agencies were monitoring the removal of the crude.
The cause of the grounding was under investigation. The owner was cooperating with the investigation and paying for the oil’s removal.
