A Norwegian chemical tanker is under tow to Poland after its grounding in Danish waters. The 2,500-dwt Sydstraum (built 1981) was off Lolland bound from Gdynia with 2,000 tonnes of industrial spirits when it struck bottom Wednesday morning and perforated its hull.
No injuries or pollution has been reported. The double-bottom ship freed itself unassisted but is being towed back to Poland to have its hull investigated. The 385-gt Danish tug Asterix (built 2003) is doing the job.
The tanker is controlled by Anders Utkilens Tankrederi of Bergen. Anders Utkilens managing director Geir Mjelde told Norwegian media in earlier reports that it was not known whether the ship grounded because it was off course.
