A large wave stove in window on the 2004-built Brittany Ferries’ passenger ro-ro Pont-Aven on Sunday night, causing minor injuries to five passengers and one crew member.

The company issued a statement yesterday saying : “Whilst passing Ouessant [Ushant] on the north western coast of France, en-route from Plymouth to Santander in northern Spain with 1149 passengers on board, MV Pont-Aven encountered what appears to have been a freak wave at 22:32 hours local time last night. The wave broke a cabin window on deck 6 (there are 11 decks) and entered the passenger area. The cabin was unoccupied.”

Brittany Ferries added : “The ship diverted to Roscoff where she arrived at 0500 local time. All passengers were disembarked and alternative travel arrangements are being made by staff in both the UK and France. The extent of the damage to the ship is being assessed and it is likely she will move to Brest for repairs.”
