Officer of tanker arrested on criminal charge after collision

    Monday 12 November 2012

The former chief officer of the then "Sichem Pandora", the Russian citizen Vasiliy ..., was arrested in Cyprus on Nov 6, 2012, on a criminal charge of duty negligence which lead to the sinking of French f/v "Klein Familie" and the death of 5 crew members, odin.tc reports.

x refused the charge and claimed his innocence. In the morning of January 5, 2006 the "Sichem Pandora" allegedly collided with f/v Klein Familie in English Canal, of the crew of six only one was rescued. The French authorities had directed the tanker to Dunkirk for investigation. Investigators analyzed the samples of the paint found on tanker’s bow and found it to be the paint of the fishing vessel.

As the "Sichem Pandora" was Malta-flagged at the time of collision, Malta authorities carried out their own investigation which was completed on Apr 18, 2012. Investigators confirmed that tanker was involved in the collision. Both vessels were found guilty in negligence, but still, the main fault was with the fishing vessel, which, while being engaged in fishing in heavy traffic area, hadn’t maintained a proper lookout and had failed to carry all recommended lights.

A UK chemist, however, found the scraps of paint on a tanker’s bow to be different from the original "Klein Familie" paint. Nevertheless, x... was found guilty. It is expected that Cyprus will extradite Mr. ... to Malta for prosecution and court.
