MALAYSIAN beaches in the southern state of Johor have been hit by an oil spill which has badly affected the local fishing industry. Fishermen’s groups are complaining that clean-up efforts are too slow while the authorities are saying that they are trying to trace the ship responsible for a five-mile long slick that washed ashore on Thursday.

According local reports, an environmental scientist with the Malaysian Nature Society in Johor, Vincent Chow has complained about a lack contingency plans to tackle oil spills which he said were common in the Singapore Strait.
