PARIS (Thomson Financial) - An oil supertanker chartered by Total that has been lying off the coast of Portugal since Dec 20 following a mechanical problem has been repaired but is waiting for better weather before attempting to reach the port of Sines, the ship’s owner told Agence-France Presse.

The mechanical problem, related to the ship’s anchor cables, has been repaired but the ship must now be emptied and undergo an inspection. "At this time everything is fine and our problem is not related to the mechanical trouble but to the bad weather," Joao Galamos of ship owner Pinto Bastos told AFP.

The tanker "New Vision" was carrying 300,000 tons of oil between Norway and Canada when a storm in the North Sea caused water damage to the ship’s electrical system. Port authorities in Sines say there is no risk of an oil spill. New Vision is a 334 metre, double-hulled supertanker built in 1994. It has a crew of 30.
