Coast Guard contained Oil spill

Oil slicks from the sunken bulk carrier “Thermopylae Sierra “, 155 Mtrs in length and 27 Mtrs in breadth have been contained by the Coast Guard personnel effectively in the coastal area from Panadura to Wellawatta from 25th August onwards.

On receiving the information from SL Navy, Coast Guard personnel were deployed for monitoring the spill and cleaning the shore.

The rusting ship went down in bad weather on 23rd night off Panadura and had threatened a 50 kilometer stretch of coastline.

The spill which was about 10 kilometers long had reached the shores of the capital Colombo.

The 15,000 tons Cyprus flagged carrier, had been outside the Colombo harbour since 2009 and had 70 tons of furnace oil on board when it sank within a range of six to eight nautical miles off the Panadura coast.
